Old Enough to Know Better but too young to Care
We're doing something. It might be a bad idea. Honestly we've both looked at
each other and said, "This is a bad idea." Here's the shortest version I can give
you. In seventy-two hours or less, we will buy our dream house in the middle of
no where, off grid, with issues (like a whole house heat set-up), with
everything that touches the house costing more money. More on how we got to this
point later.
For now some of the nitty gritting. We are moving as a family of
five. We would not consider ourselves adventurers or outdoor enthusiasts
although we enjoy doing things together outside. Following is the progression of
bumps and choices we chose to make and continued to pursue the house of our
dreams.
1. This house has four miles of rough road travel that is only
snowmobile friendly in winter-yes I will have to snowmobile to my car to drive
to work.--if you know me, the answer is yes I do know that I will have a 75 minute commute.
2. The new house is solar, but it doesn't have enough solar to
support a family of five
3. The kitchen fridge is run by
propane--which means it is the size of mini fridge on steroids.
4. There is not
currently a washer or dryer. I have 3 kids and have to haul things 4 miles to my
car in winter--trust me it's near the top of the list of upgrades.
5. I hate the
wind. It makes me cold, even a cool breeze on a hot day. The house in on a
"mountain."
6. With the exception of the mechanic, we are not mechanically
inclined. So it looks like we are all taking crash courses in how a house works.
Ie: how to start a fire in the stove, how to start the generator, how to make a
snowmobile go vroom.
7. We aren't in amazing shape. That was one of the first
things I looked up when researching off grid. The source I was reading said you
are not in shape, and the transition is rough. Oh crap. This is a big one at
least for me. He does physical stuff at work and has muscles. I'm a teacher that
controls my asthma by not raising my heart rate. The children have chores, but
except one, are going to get a rude awakening. Out of five, there is one person
who could pull over a snowmobile if electric start stops (sparking?) making it
go vroom. 8. This one should be number 1--We are night owls, four out of five
can not wake up in the morning. Leaving the house at 6:30 am will be our new normal. Oh My Gosh! We are going to die.
9. Sketchy cell signal and no broadband-while 4 of us our working/schooling remotely.
It's
going to be an adventure. We've worked most of these things out or know what's coming. I hope to continue to share it here in. I want to look back on what we were thinking. I will try to
keep each post short and include some photos. For now we are taking it one day
at a time. We feel like we have planned as much as possible and now we just have
to spend some time living it to see if we can do it, and how much we have to
upgrade to make it work.
If you have any questions for us, or tips for the change, post in the comments.
